Mt. Mazama Wayside provides visitors a chance to imagine the mountain that became Crater Lake. The former stratovolcano errupted around 5,677 BC and reduced the 12,000-foot peak by a mile. The Klamath Native Americans of the area told stories of Llao, their god of the underworld, destroying the mountain in a battle with Skell, their sky god. More information on the legend can be found at the visitors center at Crater Lake National Park.
