Welcome to Packwood! Set at the base of the Tatoosh Range on the banks of the Cowlitz River, the rural community of Packwood is surrounded by dramatic natural landscapes. A base for exploring Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, it is said to be the "heart of volcano country." Packwood offers much more than a place to stay, shop, and dine. Experience the small-town ambience in addition to outdoor activities including hiking, hunting, fishing, birding, watching wildlife, and camping.
Packwood is the last major town on the west side of the White Pass Scenic Byway. Also considered a gateway community to Mt. Rainier, this rural community is less than ten miles from the Ohanapecosh entrance to Mount Rainier National Park, and also has a fairly direct connection to the Nisqually entrance of the park via the beautiful Skate Creek Road during the summer months. Packwood also provides lodging for White Pass skiers during the winter season.
2016 was the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, and to celebrate, Visit Rainier and WSGA hosted the Visit Rainier Centennial GeoTour - 100 caches placed in and around Mount Rainier National Park. The geocaches highlighted the rich history, scenic wonders, quaint communities, and hidden gems of the Rainier region. Participants received geocoin and pathtag prizes for finding all the caches.
