Geocache Description:

Now that the light litter has been lifted and bagged, thanks to the coordianted efforts of the High Cliff staff and Friends of High Cliff volunteeers, it's time to do some heavy duty cleaning!

For decades, a number of old dump sites have languished at various locations along the lower edge of the Escarpment, rusting away on thier own imperceptively slow timeline. These mangled mazes of metal are vary dangerous to those who occasionally venture here and have no place in this wonderful State Park, even if they are off the beaten path. It's high time we got serious about addressing these debris depots and that's just what we're going to do!

Because of time constraints and staffing issues with the park, we won't be able to conduct the all-out extraction of the car husk and any other large pieces as initially anticipated, until next year. Instead, we will conduct an escarpment survey to pinpoint all heavy metal debris along the entire cliff face and document anything that cannot simply be lifted by hand, for the 2016 Spring CITO.

However, participant willing, we will hump out whatever we can carry in plastic bags to at least make a dent in these unsighly heaps. That's means carrying bags of scrap from these far locations in the park to pick-up points for pick-up and transport to the centrally located dumpsters. And that is why I'm leaving this as a 5/5. You will be earning it from time, distance, and effort standpoint.

Each participant will be required to wear PPE during the extraction, including steel-toed boots, heavy leather gloves and safty vests. A safty briefing will be given and waiver forms will be signed and collected. Depending on participation, we'll divide into 2 scouting teams to walk the lower face of the escarpment and record dump sites, and 2 extraction teams to target the two presently known dump sites. We'll go until everyone is done.

Schedule
8am Sign-in & Waiver forms, & Teams assignment at parking cords waypoint
8:30am-11:30am Metal survey and metal extraction.
11:30-noon Debrief back at pavilion.

Scouting teams should be aware that much of the lower terrain is treacherous in spots and must be very alert in the process of moving along the lower embankment. Extraction teams should be careful not to disturb the landscape any more than minimally necessary to remove metal. Some hand tools will be on hand for tricky bits, but heavy duty tools will not.
