The Timber Trail is a great cycle ride for moderately fit cyclists with some trail riding experience and goes through some of New Zealands iconic native bush. Follow the history of the area by reading the information panels along the way. The second half of the ride follows an old bush tramway used for extracting large rimu logs from the surrounding forest. Think of the hard toil needed to place this track in the 1950's compounded by the frequent cold and wet weather conditions. Large cuttings and bridges were constructed to achieve a suitable gradient for the trains. At the location of the cache a spiral was used to cope with the height change required.
