A Back Door Mystery: Brown-eyed Girl Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Old Bet: I am archiving this cache for two reasons. It has become difficult to access, even in winter, and will be much more difficult once spring erupts. So the cache site no longer fits my goal of family friendly. The second reason, however, is lack of interest: only two attempts (one a group effort) in the year before it was temporarily archived last fall. That often happens with "mature" caches. By archiving this one, I can clear the area for a new hide.

Geocache Description:

September 9, 2016: Difficulty rating increased to 3 1/2. Checked on the cache today and even knowing what it was and where it was, it took me a few minutes to make the find. More underbrush and some debris seem to have sprouted since this was hidden. However, the coordinates were pretty solid.

This is one of two hides you will have to find before you can solve A Back Door Mystery and find the third, bonus cache. This cache originally was called "Golden Eye," but by the nature of things the new name now makes more sense. It also ups the camouflage factor just a little bit.

From the parking coordinates, look south. You will see a wooden signboard marking the entrance to the Reis Park fit-trail system. There are three trails: red, blue and white. To find this cache, with your back to the parking lot you should follow the rightmost trail, which is marked by white blazes. The cache is hidden within 25 feet of the trail. Yes, it is a micro in the woods. But it should not be hard to find. There is a lot of undergrowth in the area, but there is one comparatively clear path from the trail to the cache. (Consider than an added hint.)

Since this is a micro, you will have to bring your own writing implement. When you unspool the log sheet, you will find some of the information you need to compile the coordinates for the puzzle cache. So make sure you have something to write on. (Yes, I ended a sentence with a preposition. This is a geocaching test, not an Enlish exam.)

The satellites may tell you to leave the trail and march through a tangle of sticker bushes. If you look, you will find a path to the cache that evades the barbs. A straight line may be the shortest distance between two points, but it can be the most painful.

Congratulations to GRSchmid for being the first to find this cache, despite an error in the original coordinates.

Suggested Itinerary

You can find Brown-eyed Girl as a stand-alone cache, but if you are trying to solve the mystery of the Back Door, you might want to follow this sequence:

  1. Start with this cache, Brown-eyed Girl. After making the find (and recording the necessary data) continue to follow the trail counter-clockwise.
  2. After you reach the end of the trail, you will be close to the first stage of Dewey. Goes Geocaching Dewey is a two-stage mystery cache. It is not necessary to find Dewey to unlock the Back Door, but since you are here, why not find it? (There is another cache along the trail, but I did not hide it. Dewey is included here as an act of self-promotion.)
  3. Next, either drive or walk to the suggested parking for Needles. It is not an especially long walk, but there are no sidewalks.
  4. Go find Needles. Once again, you will discover some of the numbers for the Back Door mystery.
  5. Reverse course and head back toward the Reis Park parking lot. When you get close to the lot, you may be able to find the final stage of Dewey. Goes Geocaching, depending on the day of the week and the time of day..
  6. Having found both Needles and Brown-eyed Girl, you will be able to solve the mystery of the Back Door. So load the coordinates into your GPS device, and go for it.
  7. Log onto geocaching.com and record three finds. Or four if you also found Dewey.
> There are several other caches on or near this trail:
There would have been one more, but CO LLDavanzo willingly sacrificed a Reis' Piece to clear room for my Dewey. Goes Geocaching two-parter.
