Geocache Description:

The cache is placed on the village car park next to the Church. Please take time to go and visit this interesting Church.

The village of Dodleston, near Chester, dates back to the Norman Conquest and the remains of a motte and bailey castle lie very close to the church. Several churches have stood on the site since the 13th century. The present building is the result of a complete remodelling by the local architect, John Douglas, in the latter half of the C19th, which incorporated the stone tower thought to be 4-500 years old. It has a Grade II listing.

A design for an extension on the south side had been started for kitchen and toilet facilities. We were asked to finalise the ideas and sympathetically incorporate the extension into the existing structure both in, terms of appearance and plan position within the church layout.

This involved removing an existing aisle window to incorporate a door form the church and designing a new window in the gable of the extension to match the remaining windows on that elevation of the church. The design incorporates existing details at roof level and the same materials were used for the walls and roof, which over time will blend in with the main building.

Repairs were also needed to the stone blocks of the tower. This involved a detail survey drawing of all elevations showing each stone block which needed to be repaired or replaced. The tower clock face was repainted and the tower stonework re-pointed as part of these renovation works.
