The location of this Event, is just to the south of the remains of the Witcombe Roman Villa.
It is one of my favourite places.
Set at the top of a narrow valley which the young Horsbere Brook flows through, the villa, built in AD 250, is one of a group of large houses in the region and was constructed on the steep banks of Birdlip Hill below a line of springs. It was discovered in 1818 and partially excavated, and there were further excavations in the 20th century.
I could not think of anywhere better to hold this Event.
This Event is dedicated to David Ulmer who placed the first "Stash" on this day (May 3rd) in 2000.
The Man himself
On May 2nd 2000, 15 years ago, the switch was thrown that brought GPS use to from the military to the general public.
On May 3rd David Ulmer wondered if he could hide something with enough accuracy for someone to find it. He placed a cache that day, and on May 3rd posted in online with the following message.
Here's what David wrote:
"Well, I did it, created the first stash hunt stash and here are the coordinates:"
N 45 17.460 W122 24.800
"Lots of goodies for the finders. Look for a black plastic bucket buried most of the way in the ground. Take some stuff, leave some stuff! Record it all in the log book. Have Fun!"
