Cache In Trash Out® is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers around the world have been dedicated to improving parks and other cache-friendly places. Through these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources!
The 13th Annual Cache In Trash Out Weekend is scheduled for April 25 and 26, 2015. Geocachers around the world celebrate International Cache In Trash Out weekend annually by hosting and participating in Cache In Trash Out Events in their local area. All geocachers who attend a CITO event during International CITO Weekend 2015 will be awarded a digital souvenir for display on their geocaching profiles. Events might be focused on litter clean-up, removal of invasive species, revegetation efforts or building trails. Together, we make an enormous positive impact. Did we mention that we also have a bit of fun while we're at it?
Time: 10:00 to 12:00
Date: Sunday, 26 April 2015
Place: Moreleta Kloof Reserve
The purpose of this CITO is to remove the invasive plants called "bug weed" in the Moreleta Kloof Reserve. The bug weed (Solanum mauritianum) invasion of Gauteng has now reached crisis proportions and, according to the Friends of Moreleta Kloof, the Moreleta Kloof Reserve has unfortunately been hard hit by this foreign invader. The Friends of Moreleta Kloof are extremely grateful for the help that we can provide and our efforts will make a big difference to this little gem of Nature in Pretoria.
A single bug weed can grow into a 2m high tree in one summer, but it is in autumn and winter that birds eat the berries and spread the seeds. Bug weed is designated a Category 1 invasive alien plant, and by law, gardeners are obliged to remove and destroy the plant.
Please wear comfortable clothing, walking shoes, gloves and a hat. You should also bring some water, sunscreen, a rain jacket (if wet) and a pair of secateurs or garden clippers for cutting off the bug weeds. A saw would also be most useful for removing the larger trees.
Plastic bags will be provided.
There are 9 awesome geocaches in the Moreleta Kloof Reserve as a bonus for the cachers who have not yet done them.
