9. Wray Cleave Workout "Buddles" Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

dartymoor: Archiving this series after two and a bit years as the paths have become even more overgrown in this time and not a pleasure to walk. This is obviously not a priority with the National Park to keep clear - limited budget and limited parking make this understandable.

Well done those who perservered and enjoyed this tough little series.

The caches will be collected in very soon.

Geocache Description:

Climb the short hill from #8 to here and step carefully down to the working area.

These remains are what's left of the processing area for the nearby mines producing Micaceous Haemetite.

I helped regain this location in 1990 from trees and overgrowth when I was an apprentice to DNP. This is the processing area for the nearby mines. The circular areas are buddles, allowing separation of the load from the lighter ore once crushed, using water and brushes. The ore was then spread to dry on a wooden floor which was heated underneath by air from the chimney before being bagged up and loaded into horse drawn carts below. The footpaths converge on this area as they were forged by the workers - and women would often be employed at this location whilst the men worked underground.

If you are interested in how this worked, visit the nearby Kelly Mine who have a restored and working mine similar to this down the valley.

This cache is part of the Bridford Brimble Series. Full details at 1, Wray Cleave Workout
