Regec Castle

The castle Regéc stands on top of the 625 m high Várhegy hill.

The first evidence of the castle dates back to 1307 when the Palatine Amadeus Aba has issued a diploma where it was mentioned. The Castle was built by the members of the Aba family members possibly in the 13/14 century. In the next centuries it was a royal possession.

The castle was originally much smaller in size than today: it only occupied the northern boulder in a tower and the south of it, arched walled courtyard, which probably were wooden buildings. This small castle was in the late 15th century radically transformed, and in the middle of the 16th century greatly expanded to the south. Full build consistently only in the 17th century, when the holders (Serédy, Alaghy's, Rákóczi's) served as the residence as well.

The Castle was sieged in 1537, 1635 and in 1689 when It was destroyed by mercenaries.

In 1999 archaeological exploration has begun, later in 2003 started the conservation of the Castle, which is still in process. source: varak.hu

The castle is opened at 09:00 - 17:00 daily.
Out of this time the entry is unwarranted, but probably the Castle is closed.
