After much consideration, the Federal government announced in June 1985 that a national maritime museum would be constructed at Darling Harbour as part of the New South Wales State government's redevelopment of the area for the Australian bicentenary. Although initially scheduled to open in 1988, construction delays, cost overruns, and disagreements between the State and Federal governments over funding responsibility pushed the opening back to November 1991.
Six gallery spaces at the museum contain permanent exhibitions focusing on themes such as Navigators, Eora-First People, Passengers, Watermarks, Navy and Australia-USA marine relations. A further four gallary spaces are used for temporary exhibitions and functions. The museum's collection of full-scale ships focuses on three vessels open for public inspection: the HM Bark Endeavour replica, the destroyer HMAS Vampire, and the submarine HMAS Onslow.
The cache is best accessed from the western side (Murray St) rather than from the museum. While the container is not difficult to retrieve, there is a small 3m cliff nearby which could pose danger to smaller children, so for their own safety please monitor their location at all times. It is difficult to be stealthy in this location, so speed is probably your next best technique to avoid detection! Cache was placed with a pencil however it's always a good idea to bring your own writing implement in case it's missing or blunt. Please replace the cache as found to preserve the experience for the next finder.
