On this date in 1917, Earl Mitchell invented the MoonPie in Chattanooga, Tennessee. After 98 years, this tasty confection is still being made by the Chattanooga Bakery. Considered to some to be the epitome in nutrition, this is one of the few foods on the market which contains the Minimum Daily Requirement (MDR) for selenium. While New Yorkers may consider a bagel and Starbucks to be the ideal breakfast, generations of Southerners have relied on the MoonPie and RC Cola to be the "Breakfast of Champions." The Central Intelligence Agency has a strong following for the MoonPie/Cola jump-start breakfast despite the presence of both Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts on the CIA campus at Langley, VA. A classified study by the CIA found that the most astute and insightful intelligence analysis was conducted by those analysts consuming a MoonPie and cola drink at the start of the work day.
