St Mary’s is on an ancient holy site where there have been at least three churches. The first known date for any building is in the reign of King Henry VIII when, on 30 March 1503, the Archbishop of York, Thomas Savage, authorized its use as the place of worship for the local community. The one known as Old Peg was built in 1759 and the third, this present church was constructed in 1843 precisely on the foundations of its predecessor, down to the two entrances in the south wall. The architect was the eminent Yorkshire architect Robert Dennis Chantrell, who also designed other churches in the Holme Valley and is best known for his rebuilding of Leeds Parish Church, 1837- 41. It is interesting to compare the other churches he built in the Holme Valley; Emmanuel, Lockwood 1830, Netherthong 1830, Farnley Tyas 1840 and Armitage Bridge 1848. At the end of the 19th century under the influence of the Oxford Movement and the desire to render worship with greater dignity major changes were made to the interior. These were done in 1888 to the designs of Charles Hodgson Fowler of Durham
