Geocache Description:

Thank you to all who have taken the time to find this cache. Our island home has been sold to RCCL as of July 1, 2016. This cache is being archived as requested by geocaching.com.

My father purchased this island in 1972 and sold most of it to the Cruise Ship company around 1990. We kept five acres and build the house you passed earlier. Our first major construction project (in 1979) was a 50 foot high water tower for all future buildings. Only part of the foundation remains.

Building on a deserted island is a big challenge. We had to bring in the first bulldozer by landing craft! After making a dock (the wooden one in the passenger area) we were able to land more supplies. The tower which used to be here was built by hand. The hardest part was digging 1 cubic yard (1 cubic meter) holes in each corner with picks and shovels. These anchored the wooden beams which made a structure much like an oil derrick. All of the cement and wood was carried here by hand from the dock. There was an observation deck on the very top of the tower with the water tanks right below it. A stairway wound up the inside. The view from the top was phenomenal! After we sold most of the island to the cruise line, they cut down the tower to minimize their insurance risk in case passengers climbed it and fell. It was a sad day to see three months of a dozen people's back-breaking work come crashing down. At least you can still find one leg!

*** There is no need to go into the RCCL's workers area ***
