In Memory of Norfolk Birder Traditional Geocache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

Hanoosh: Hi

This cache has been flagged by Geocaching HQ as one that may need attention.

It would appear that this cache may benefit from some attention by the cache owner as it has either not been found for a while or there is a reported issue with the cache. May I ask that you check the cache to confirm it is still in situ and/or deal with any maintenance required and/or give an indication of when it may be up and running again for people to find.

If there is no response to this log after 30 days I will archive the cache. In the meantime I am disabling the cache.

Guidelines:

  • You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to ensure it is in proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.) or posts a Needs Maintenance log. Temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have addressed the problem.

You are permitted a reasonable amount of time - generally, up to 4 weeks – in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing.

Could the cache owner please place a note on the cache page so that other cachers and I can see what your intentions are.

If you no longer wish to maintain the cache then the listing should be archived.

Please DO NOT send an email about this cache in case I do not receive it. Posting a reviewer note will ensure your cache does not get archived in error.

Please note that the guidelines say that if a cache is archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ staff for lack of maintenance then it will not be unarchived. Here is the link to the relevant part of the guidelines Ownership after publication.

Regards

Geocache Description:

David (Norfolk Birder) sadly passed away on 21st January 2015.  He had been caching since 2008 and loved to travel, always combining his trips abroad with birdwatching and finding a few caches. David had found  7497 caches at the time of his death.

This cache is placed in his memory.

In addition to geocaching David was also a keen birdwatcher and would meet up with ‘birding friends  most weeks  in Cley.  He loved this area, and it was here that we first met.  I had picked up a geocoin that needed to go to the States and I knew he was going on holiday there.  We met at the Visitor Centre and after handing over the coin and a long chat which included scones and coffee we went to find a few caches that had just been released.  That was the first of many trips we took together in the pursuit of a shared hobby.  He would work out the route and often make a packed lunch, and we’d take it in turn to drive.

His enthusiasm knew no bounds.  When I was on holiday in Scotland he wrote the following in an email about an impetuous trip he had taken to the highlands to catch a glimpse of a rarely seen bird in the United Kingdom:

“More from memory lane, Elgin again. In the early nineties after I had retired but still living in the flat on the Southbank by Blackfriars Bridge, I set off one early  evening and drove from home overnight to Elgin to see a Wandering Tatler, a way off course vagrant and a first for Britain. Stopped at services near Sheffield for coffee, then next somewhere on the A9 north of Perth before seeing the bird at first light just north of Elgin".

From an area a few yards past GZ there are great views across the marshes and out to sea.   You are looking for a black tub placed close to the path.  Please take a moment after signing the log to enjoy the view and remember David.

To reach this cache you can take the  public footpath from  cache GC5P672.  There is room to pull off the road at N 52° 57.272 E 001° 04.392 but please be aware that this area serves the nearby fields so please ensure that you don't block the field access.  If approaching from Cley parking is available at N 52° 57.274 E 001° 04.005 An alternative footpath from here leads to GZ from the opposite direction.
