Uno zelante ufficiale tedesco ebbe la "brillante" idea di far cadere in mezzo alla carreggiata i tanti cipressi che costeggiavano la strada statale 439 che porta a Pomarance.
Sotto la minaccia delle armi alcuni giovani Salinesi furono obbligati ad intaccare la base dei cipressi con delle accette in modo da potervi collocare una saponetta di tritolo.
Tutti i cipressi crollarono tranne uno.
Gli americani con i loro grossi caterpillar liberarono velocemente la strada.
Tutti i cipressi erano stati abbattuti per far guadagnare ai tedeschi solo pochi minuti.
Tutti tranne uno. Uno restò ferito ma non fu abbattuto. Il tritolo non esplose.
74 anni e il cipresso è ancora li, solitario, invecchiato ma è ancora al suo posto. Tenace ed orgoglioso.
Summer 1944, the nazisti were fleeing from Saline di Volterra. The American soldiers were getting closer. Were slowed down, they stopped going. A zealous German officer had the "brilliant" idea of dropping in the middle of the carriageway the many cypress trees that lined the main road 439. Under the threat of weapons some young mans from saline were forced to attack the base of cypress trees with hatchets so you can place a bar of soap with TNT. All cypress collapsed except one. Americans with their big caterpillar liberated the road quickly. All cypress trees had been felled to make the Germans a few minutes. All except one. One was wounded but was not shot down. The dynamite did not explode. 74 years later, the cypress is still there, lonely, aging but is still in place.
