Geocache Description:

Today is Pi-Day- 3.14/15 !

(Well, actually, that's only if  your an Murican. For the rest of the world it's 14.3.15 but enough of my pedantry...)

A get-together for cachers and date-geeks!

This event starts at 1pm and ends at 3pm.

What is Pi Day?

Pi is a "constant"- the number which described the relationship between the radius of a circle (distance from the centre to the edge) and its circumference (the distance around its edge). Pi is represented by this symbol:

However, Pi is not an exact whole number. It is just a little bigger than three, meaning that the circumference of a circle is just over three times its radius. The exact value of pi has not yet been calculated but many computers have worked it out to several million decimal places or more. It is approximately 3.1415927..... and so Pi day is (in Murican terms) 3.14.15 !

Today's event is an excuse to celebrate the date and to earn a special Pi day souvenir from Groundspeak. Anyon who attends an event today will be awarded a special souvenir. There's also one for anyone who logs a find on a Mystery cache, so look out for one nearby.

As well as the official Groundspeak souvenir for attending an event today there is also a unique animated badge just for this event, kindly designed by Harveyjj! Instructions on how to post this to your profile will be posted here after the event. Another reason to come along!

Please remember to log a "Will Attend" so that I can tell the pub how big an area to reserve for us. State how many people are in your team too.

When you get to the hotel you need to go into the pub area and look for the specially reserved section.

Food is available and the menu can be seen here. However, there is no requirement to eat or drink if you want to attend the event. Food does not need to be pre-ordered. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

There are several aspects to this event:

1. Firstly, a group photo. When you arrive you can sign the log-in sheet and, if you want to take part in there photo, you will be allocated a digit- one of the decimal places of Pi which you must then write large and clearly on a sheet of paper using a marker pen. Let's see how many decimal places of pi we can get to!

2. When everyone is here we'll arrange ourselves for a group photo. (We may have to move outside temporarily for this, depending on how many digits we have used!) We'll need to arrange all our digits into the correct order so listen carefully!

3. Back inside, those who want food can order it now. The rest of the time is purely social. Meet caching friends old and new, exchange any trackables you have recently picked up, admire each others' coin collections, solve puzzles together and generally have fun!

4. If this is your first event , or if you are new to geocaching, please say so in your Will Attend log. That way we can make a special effort to look out for you and make you feel welcome. We don't bite, except at Hallowe'en and want to make you feel part of our lovely community of tupperware hunters!

5. I can't rule out the possibility  that I will lead a chorus of Don McClean's "Murican Pi(e)" on my guitar at some point. Sorry.

6. Towards the end of the event there will be a free raffle to determine who can claim "First to Find" for this event cache. If you want to take part please make sure you collect a raffle ticket during the event.

Happy Pi Day Everyone!
