Mariners Church
This Church was built in 1849 (the opening ceremony was 11th February that year), initially for the workers at Gloucester Docks, and crews of vessels moored there. It is a simple building with just a nave and bell tower.
The chancel is at the west end of the church instead of the usual east due to the close proximity of a warehouse.
Services are still held at the church (Sundays 10:30am and 6:00pm as well as a midweek service on Thursdays 12:30). More information about services and activities the church provide can be found here
With Gloucester declining as a port, the church was at risk of becoming redundant but the recent developments at the Docks has provided the church a new lease of life and has seen membership grow from 7 in 2012 to now over 170.
The church is open everyday though on rare occasions can be locked for short periods due to events or maintenance but we recommend taking time to explore it and if you are lucky there maybe somebody available to speak too about its history.
