Across the street from this cache is a most amazing Escher-esque building which must be explored to be appreciated. Built as a slaughterhouse, the building is filled with beautifully designed Art Deco motifs in many of the windows, "flowering" columns supporting the structure, beautiful ramps traversing the open space between the holding pens and the central slaughter area, and many elaborate concrete stairways. You can also see the feng shui influence of round universe and square earth. As a slaughterhouse, much thought was given to the well-being of the animals. All the windows were built facing west, which was thought to help aid the cattle's process of reincarnation. Rough floor surfaces prevented cattle from slipping, lattice windows on the outside were built to create maximum air circulation, and thick but hollow concrete walls kept the building cool even in the hot Shanghai summer.
Today this building is in flux. Used for weddings, club nights, independent markets, art studios, and small eateries, the building has yet to find a place in modern Shanghai. It's out-of-the way location makes it difficult to attract businesses, and yet its beauty seems a perfect home for artists and upscale markets. As of the date this cache was placed, there is a nice - but expensive - coffee shop on the first floor, a nice place to relax after wandering the building.
The cache is a short (10 minute) walk from the Hailun Metro Station (Lines 10 and 4)
