Geocache Description:

St Winfrith East Dean

The first evidence of a church in East Dean is in the Doomsday Book of 1086. The origin of the church is probably Saxon, and probably a wooden structure, replaced by a single celled building to which chancels were added in the 12th Century.

As a small chapel serving a tiny community, and having very few treasures, it seems to have escaped from unwanted attention during the religious difficulties of the 15th century. In fact there is a lack of any sign of rebuild or refurbishment between the 13th and 17th centuries.

The porch is 18th Century, and the door in to the church is from the 17th century with original strap hinges and wood cased lock.

There is a 12th century little round-headed lancet window on the north side of the chancel, it is thought to be a leper squint, a window where the sick and infected could watch Mass from outside the building.
