Geocache Description:

War Memorial cache #57 We shall remember them ~ Rugeley.

There are literally thousands of War Memorials around the country. WW1 Memorials were usually raised through public subscription to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice. In August 2014 we saw the centenary of the start of the First World War so we thought it was about time there was a series dedicated to War Memorials. There is an un-numbered series in Scotland called Lest we forget and we have learned of another series called Poppies on Parade. The name of this series We Shall remember them, was chosen from the very moving poem “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon. It is well worth searching out and reading.”

Rugeley War Memorial was unveiled on Sunday, 23 January 1921 at 3.00 pm. by the Right Honourable, The Earl of Dartmouth, Lord Lieutenant of the County.

Many years’ later plans were made to create a traffic-free zone for Rugeley Town Centre, also several highway modifications were required and it was decided to move the Memorial in 1972 to a new site in Brook Square. In 2008 a culvert which ran under Brook Square collapsed and this led to a decision to return the Memorial to Anson Street and place it near to the original location.

This is a simple offset multi cache. Stand with your back to the library and look at the panel remembering those who fell in the Great War 1914 -1918. Look at the 21st name on the list which appears on the 19th line. Using the surname only give each letter a number in the order they appear in the alphabet e.g. A = 1, B = 2 etc. and then do the following calculations for the final coords A = 6th letter - 3rd letter B = 7th letter C = 1st letter - 9th letter D = 11th letter - 8th letter E = Numbers of letter P's in name F = 6th letter - 9th letter Checksum = 24 The cache can be located at N52 45.ABC, W001 56.DEF

We will remember them!

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Just-us-Two know first at justustwo1013@gmail.com so they can keep track of the memorial numbers and names to avoid any duplication.
