Geocache Description:

Follow in the footsteps of your ancestors as you visit the locations in which old photos of Salvington and Durrington were taken.

Welcome to the Salvington Road Old Photo Tour! For a while now, I've been interested in the http://www.westsussexpast.org.uk/ website, a database of historic photos of places in West Sussex. It was strange to see places I knew very well in, say, the 19th Century, the trademark horse and cart parked outside.

In this Wherigo, I will take you on a tour of the original locations in which these photos were taken, and we'll see what the places are like today. You'll walk from the old Half Moon Pub along Salvington Road, after which you'll find the final micro-sized cache.

The first location does not have pavement, so please be careful when Geocaching with young children. The rest of the cache is fully paved (though there is a road to cross).

The walk is not circular (as there were only enough photos to go one way).

If you haven't found a Wherigo cache before (they are disappointingly rare) you'll need to find some way of playing. Geocaching.com suggests playing Wherigos on Pocket PCs, Garmin Colorados or Garmin Oregons, but, since it's no longer 2008, you're more likely to have a smartphone or tablet around the house.

  • For iOS devices (iPhones, iPads and iPods), Geocaching has an official app on the app store called Wherigo. I have no experience with this app but you can find instructions and help online.
  • For Android devices, try WhereYouGo, a third party app. Once you've started the app, go to Settings>Login Credentials and put in your Geocaching account, then go to the link at the top of this cache description in a browser and select 'open with WhereYouGo'. Alternatively, connect your device to your computer and move the cartridge file to storage/emulated/0/WhereYouGo/directory.

If playing on a mobile device, download the version for 'Pocket PC' on the Wherigo website.

The final location in the Wherigo is the cache, though due to the limitations of the platform I can't take you to the exact location. Instead, you'll go to a rough zone where the cache is located, accompanied by a fairly clear hint. You'll also get a set of coordinates for the cache, in case you'd rather use your normal Geocache finding app or GPS receiver.

The information and questions in each location are trigged by arriving nearby. If you exit back to the Wherigo home screen, but haven't answered the question yet, leave the location and then go back again.

I've tried my best to get accurate locations and information for the photos in the Wherigo. If you find an inaccuracy, feel free to email theinchesgeo@gmail.com and I'll try to set it right!

Credit for most photos goes to www.westsussexpast.co.uk/pictures, a great website (go to their search page and look up your local area for all sorts of images from the last 250 years).

The Half Moon Pub image at the beginning of the cache belongs to Colin Walton. Used with kind permission.

Many thanks to Yourself (not you, the Geocaching user Yourself) for creating Urwigo, the Wherigo builder!
