Geocache Description:

Hayes - Our Lady of the Rosary

Another in the ever expanding Church Micro Series, started by Sadexploration.

The "Taking Stock" web site, a catalogue of Catholic Churches, starts its entry for this church with “A functional church of 1954, originally built as the multi-purpose Rosary Hall. It is of little architectural or historic significance.” So not a good start then – the rest of the text is a summary of what is said on that web site.

On 22 March 1946 bomb-damaged Grandfields Nursery was purchased as a site for the church, presbytery and hall at a cost of £4,500. However, funding constraints and lack of materials postponed building work. In November 1954 a multi-purpose hall, Rosary Hall, opened. Two years later Hayes officially became a mission and the hall was converted into the church of Our Lady of the Rosary, which opened on the 15 November 1956.

Subsequently the hall has been extended, adding meeting space and then coloured glass windows designed by parishioner Peter Proto, which were installed in the west wall. This was followed by the Millennium Window, also by Proto (2000). At some point, a gabled timber porch was set in front of the flat-roofed original porch.

The church is built in brick laid in Wessex bond, with some roughcast walls, concrete window frames and a copper roof. The plan is rectangular, with a hall attached to the north side at right angles. The full width of the west wall is taken up by three large windows of four lights each, depicting the dove (centre), a crown (left) and the Alpha and Omega (right). The gable area is timber panelled with a relief of Our Lady with the Child.

The north side has the entrance to the hall, and a confessional, which is also accommodated in the hall but has its separate entrance from the church. The altar, circular font, and tabernacle stand are made from Italian marble. The lectern, benches and presidential chair are from timber. Above the tabernacle hangs a large carved crucifix. On either side of the sanctuary area are statues of St Joseph with the Child (left) and the Sacred Heart (right).

The cache is a small magnetic black tube, which is not at the coordinates shown, but is at:

N51 355 1124. 1328 (1138+1439) 1130
E 0 (1138-1164). (1439-1328) 1138 (1439-1328)

The puzzle has a religious theme and I wouldn't be against you using the Wikipedia list, it's quite popular.

You can check your solution here

The cache should be accessible for wheelchair users.
