Geocache Description:

A small cache to mark this bit of history and as you cross the border.

This spots has a memorial that tells the story of the disputes and hardship when the border was marked out and settled between SA and VIC. The Monument was constructed as part of the Centenary of Federation project in 2001 and was during the 150th year of the appointment of the first Surveyor General of Victoria. The border between the Australian states of South Australia and Victoria was established in 1836 by imperial letters patent "as the 141st degree meridian of longitude east of Greenwich". Due to human error by numerous explorers and surveyors, it took more than 75 years and a protracted legal dispute before the precise placement of the border was settled, resulting in the forfeiture of more than 500 square miles (1,300 km2) of territory from South Australia to Victoria. In 1914, after a successful appeal to the United Kingdom's Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, a sum of £215,000 was awarded to the state of South Australia and the legal dispute was ended. Take the time to read the information board here about the various surveyors that attempted to marked out this border, the dispute over the 'thin slither of land', and the issues of fire burning down the previous border markers. There isn't much here....just a picnic table, the memorial and the information board to mark you crossing the border....and now a cache! You are looking for a small bison tube not too far from the memorial and information board. You will need to bring your own pen/pencil. Local cacher Bucketeer has agreed to be the local maintainer for this cache.
