Geocache Description:

War Memorial cache #31 We will remember them ~ St Marys

This War Memorial has a fascinating history in that for 50 years it was actually missing! The two-tonne marble tablet was found in 2006 in a corner of a Gateshead Council depot and required a public appeal for information. Eventually the memorial was discovered to have been from Park Terrace Presbyterian Church in Gateshead.

The church on Park Terrace was demolished in 1964 which was when this memorial was removed and stored in a council depot until it was discovered. In 2009 it was moved to St Mary's graveyard.

This stone is now the centrepiece of a memorial garden which was created by officers and apprentices from the 103 Field Squadron of 72 Engineer Regiment who designed and installed it in May 2014, the timbers used to house the marble tablet came from the reclaimed timbers from the restoration work on the High Level Bridge.

Please note that the St Mary's Heritage Centre is only open Tues - Sat: 10:00–16:00, outside of these times the gates to allow access will be closed
I have been advised that the Heritage centre is no longer open on a Sunday.
