Em terra, existiam pântanos com águas estagnadas, pobres em oxigénio, o que inibia os processos de decomposição biológica, favorecendo a conservação de matéria orgânica (Geomonumento da Quinta da Granja).
Com o recuo da linha de costa, provocado pela descida do nível do mar, instalou-se um clima mais continental, com influência fluvial. Estes rios depositaram arenitos, ricos em micas provenientes das regiões montanhosas graníticas a Nordeste.
Perto destes rios habitavam mamíferos, cujos restos fossilizaram nestas areias.
