The Island Road was constructed in 1953 through marshland with only obtainable by boat. As time went by, the marshland began to erode and turned into open water making the island very vulnerable. During high winds, the road frequently became sumberged by water and impassable to vehicles. Because of the harsh weather conditions the road eventually went from a double lane to a single lane. However, in 2011 the roads was restored and repaired. Along the road, you will see locals hoping to catch a big one and is the filming location of Beast of the Southern Wild.
