Beschreibung (Deutsch)

Listing/Description (English)

Bjelašnica

Bjelašnica is a mountain in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, located southwest to the Sarajevo. The summit of the mountain, also called Bjelašnica, is 2067 m above sea level. From this summit, one can enjoy a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains. Bjelašnica is a very popular recreation area for hiking and skiing. During the XIV Olympic Winter Games held in Sarajevo in 1984, Bjelašnica was a mountain venue for alpine skiing competition for men. Before the XIV Olympic Games, the infrastructure to support this important sports event was built up, including a number of hotels. Most of the infrastructure was demolished during a 1992-1995 war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which has been slowly renewed after the war.

The Observatory on the Summit

There is the oldest meteorological station in the Balkans on the Bjelašnica summit. The weather has been observed and recorded from this station since 1894. This is the point at which the Mediterranean and continental wind streams collide, which often results in strong winds, which can reach speeds of over 62mph.

Anton Obermüller

The first meteorologist who worked at the Meteorological station on Bjelašnica was an Austrian Anton Obermüller. The station was established during the Austrian-Hungarian rule in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and he was the first employee there.  He stayed at the station for nearly four years before his death. He was buried close to the summit and his grave is still there, near a road running to the station.

Warning:

The use of an all-terrain vehicle is strongly recommended. Searching for the geocache and driving to the location with vehicles of any kind is done at one's own risk. For reasons of safety regarding the mine situation, do not walk across country, stay on the road!
