Geocache Description:

St John the Evangalist - Lepton

The church of St. John the Evangelist, was erected in 1868 at a cost of about £5,000, and consecrated in November of that year, is an edifice in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower containing one bell. The church has five memorial windows, and affords sittings for 450 persons. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £13o, with residence, in the gift of the rector of Kirkheaton, and held since 1878 by the Rev. John White. The vicarage house was erected in 1880 at a cost of £1,600.
In medieval times the population in this area was sparse and money to build churches was in short supply. Monks from Dewsbury Minister would walk by way of Kirkheaton through Little Lepton to Kirkburton and beyond to take the sacraments to the faithful.
