The refuge is a 4,212 acre refuge composed of freshwater marsh and cypress-tupelo swamp. It provides an excellent habitat for waterfowl, wading birds, and neotropical songbirds. A one-mile walking trail through the refuge can be accessed off of Bayou Black Drive in Gibson
