Geocache Description:

This Geocache takes you to the beautiful village of Aberdour which has an award-winning railway station!

Contrary to what you may have heard on the tannoy at Edinburgh Waverley Railway Station, the name of this beautiful village is pronounced "Aber-dower" and not "Aber-door".  The "dour" part of the name refers to water and is unrelated to the Scots work "dour" meaning "gloomy".  Until fairly recently, Aberdour was two villages - Easter Aberdour and Wester Aberdour.  This Geocache is in Easter Aberdour - the bridge over the railway line is the join between the villages.  The village is host to a fabulous festival at the end of July/begining of August and boast two lovely beaches, a castle and a number of nice wee shops and pubs.  Many of those who live in Fife, Edinburgh, Midlothian an beyond will have memories of summer days in Aberdour - particularly on Silver Sands beach.   It has longs since been a holiday retreat either for a cheeky wee day trip or a longer stay.

The village(s) date back many years and gets a mention in a number of versions of Child Ballad 58 "Sir Patrick Spens":

Haf owre, haf owre to Aberdour,
It's fiftie fadom deip,
And thair lies guid Sir Patrick Spens
Wi the Scots lords at his feit.

This was also known to many as the call from the ticket inspector on the train between Edinburgh and Aberdour:

Half an hour, Half an hour, Half an hour to Aberdour - tickets please.

The villagers are very proud of their railway station which has one many awards for its plants and gardens.  There are a number of other Geocaches in the village and nearby which are also worth a visit. Welcome to the "Jewel of Fife"!

Congratulations to The Harvey Clan on being first to find despite the dodgy coordinates! Let me know if the coordinates are still dodgy and I'll endeavour to fix them...
