Largo Garibaldi è la più ampia delle piazze cittadine, tanto più in quanto è preceduta dalla graziosa piazzetta alberata oggi denominata XXIX settembre, dal nome di una delle canzoni più famose del fenomeno beat emiliano. Proprio sulla piazzetta si affaccia la casa presso cui (al tempo, nel 1550, vi era la chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista) venne battezzato Orazio Vecchi, grande musicista modenese autore di celebri madrigali. Dall’altro lato della piazzetta, affacciato anche sui viali, palazzo Vaccari è degli anni Venti del Novecento.
Oltre i viali di circonvallazione, che seguono l’antico tracciata delle mura, si apre invece il largo vero e proprio, un tempo porta di accesso alla città per chi provenisse da Bologna. Qui stavano le statue dei due garibaldini oggi lungo i viali, presso il retro della chiesa di San Pietro, e quel monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II – oggi restaurato – che è visibile in piazzale Risorgimento.
A destra si nota l’armonioso Teatro Storchi, dietro al quale comincia il vasto parco delle ex mura, mentre al centro della piazza la monumentale Fontana dei due Fiumivenne realizzata da Giuseppe Graziosi nel 1938: vuole ricordare la particolare posizione geografica di Modena, sita nella fertile mesopotamia tra i fiumi Secchia a ovest e Panaro a est. A sinistra, la casa gialla di epoca fascista fu per anni il lussuoso Albergo Reale, mentre a destra, la casa al numero 11 era abitata da Enzo Ferrari. Dalla piazza si gode una bella veduta della Ghirlandina e della chiesa di San Biagio.

On the left, the yellow house in the fascist era was for years the luxurious Hotel Royal, on the right, the house at No. 11 was inhabited by Enzo Ferrari. From the square you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Ghirlandina and the church of San Biagio.
