Exeter St Thomas is a suburban railway station which originally opened in 1846 and serves the suburb of St. Thomas and the town quay area. It is on the main Great Western line between London Paddington and Penzance and is elevated on a low viaduct with entrances on Cowick Street. In its early days, Brunels’ Atmospheric Railway was employed here and there was a coal yard distributing coal that had come up via train from Teignmouth. The platforms are reached by means of steps either side of the viaduct; the down platform is accessed via quite a posh looking white building/facade. The station is unstaffed now with the former station building used for a bar and nightclub. It is mainly served by local trains which stop here - fast trains to and from London only stop once a day on each side. This is also a popular place for steam enthusiasts to gather and photograph various trains throughout the summer - there is good sighting and a nice backdrop when looking towards St. Davids station. Being so elevated a station it attracts the weather for sure so wrap up warm if visiting the platforms in winter!
