Geocache Description:

Update 12/4/15: We removed the outer lock as it was broken and not opening. The cache is findable without the lock. Just make sure you close everything properly so the first door does not blow open.

Look familiar? This cache was originally placed for the CCARF14 event, held September 2014. The cache has been moved from its original location in Ranchlands to the graciously offered back fence of Jam Momma and Jam Jammies. Please do not attempt this cache at night. We don't want to anger the neighbours and have to move the cache and make a third cache page!

We are pleased to announce that our cache was honoured as Geocache of the Week (in the whole world!) in October 2014.

What do you do with 386 old pennies? You can't even melt them down into copper, since the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) hasn't made pure copper pennies since 1996. Rolling them is too much work. Oh boy, we may as well make a cache. In its previous incarnation, $3.85, this cache (container) was winner of the "Anything But Micro" category at CCARF14.

From 1997 to 2012, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) produced both magnetic and non-magnetic pennies. The magnetic properties of the pennies depend on their metal composition, which can be either copper plated steel (magnetic) or copper plated zinc (non-magnetic). The RCM would purchase either the steel or the zinc cores depending on which one was less expensive at the time, which explains how some pennies from the same year can be either magnetic or non-magnetic. Magnetic pennies can also be identified by a small letter "P" under the Queen's head, or on the newer coins, a small RCM symbol of the Maple leaf. Some of the Canadian pennies deemed most valuable by collectors are the ones where the P is on the wrong kind of penny (or conversely, missing where it should be).

For this cache, you will find out which pennies are magnetic and not magnetic and which particular penny holds the key to unlocking this cache. Please make sure you replace and reset everything the way you found it, including reading the instructions stored with the logbook, so that the next cacher can enjoy the full experience of this container. PARKING: Be aware when parking your vehicle and don't block the alley or anyone's garage. It is usually best to park on the street and walk in.

MAGNETS: Rare earth magnets are used in this cache. These are strong magnets that, among other nasty things, can wipe your credit cards or damage your electronics. Take care when handling them and avoid putting them in a non-empty pocket.

KIDS: We think your kids will love this cache. However, there are small, important parts to this cache that can easily be lost or swallowed. Make sure you keep an eye on the young ones!

SNOW: This cache is available in winter and in snow. However, the snow can make it impossible to find any small pieces accidentally dropped. Please take care with managing the pieces.
