Polgooth Methodist Church
First records of Polgooth date from the late 1500’s although there are apocryphal stories of tin being traded with the Phoenicians as far back as 1000 BC.
During the 18th century Polgooth was owned by the Edgcumbe family and for a time the Polgooth Mines were the richest in England.
Various steam powered pumps were used to draw water from the workings and it is said that James Watt stayed in Polgooth for a time when he invested in the mines here. Even the famous potters Josiah and John Wedgewood invested in the mines in Polgooth.
The village grew around the mines and the spoil tips with most of the cottages being described as being of “gloomy appearance”. The village coalesced into what we can recognise today during the 19th century and serious mining finished in the late 1890’s.
Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries the village was influenced by some powerful Quaker and Methodist preachers. John Wesley preached at Polgooth in 1755 and a Methodist Church/Chapel has existed in the village since that time.
The present Church is a simple building in which regular services are held.
The Cache
This is a traditional cache placed on a footpath not far from the church. the cache is a tube about twice the length of a 35mm film pot.
Your challenge is finding your way through the complex maze of streets in Polgooth to find Chapel Hill. There is parking for a few minutes outside the church and you should be able to locate the cache in that time without difficulty.
Please avoid the Sunday Service times of 9:45 and 10:30 am out of respect for the churchgoers.
