Geocache Description:

The posted coordinated are merely a general area for you to overview from the shore. There is no need to actually go out to them. If you do you will get wet, and attacked by sea otters.

A wave-cut platform, coastal bench, or wave-cut bench is the narrow flat area often found at the base of a sea cliff or along the shoreline of a lake, bay, or sea that was created by the erosion of waves. Coastal benches are often most obvious at low tide when they become visible as huge areas of flat rock. Sometimes the landward side of the platform is covered by sand, forming the beach, and then the platform can only be identified at low tides or when storms move the sand.

Coastal benches form after destructive waves hit against the cliff face, causing undercutting between the high and low water marks, mainly as a result of corrosion and hydraulic power, creating a wave-cut notch. This notch then enlarges into a cave. The waves undermine this portion until the roof of the cave cannot hold due to the pressure and freeze-thaw weathering acting on it, and collapses, resulting in the cliff retreating landward. The base of the cave forms the coastal bench as attrition causes the collapsed material to be broken down into smaller pieces, while some cliff material may be washed into the sea. This may be deposited at the end of the platform, forming an off-shore terrace.

To log this Earthcache, send me an email with the following information:

1. The name and GC# of this Earthcache.
2. How thick, or how high would you estimate these coastal benches to be? (not the cliff, but the wave-cut platforms below.)
3. The posted coordinates is centered right in between two coastal shelves. How many feet across would you estimate the gap is between these two platforms?
4. Compare the two separate coastal platforms on each side of the posted coordinates. Are these platforms about the same thickness/height or is one higher than the other?

Please do not post your answers in your log.

Congratulations Pearbro on FTF!
