Il 17 giugno 1970 ben 4 giocatori del Cagliari Campione (Albertosi, Cera, Domenghini e Riva) erano in campo nella Nazionale Italiana per la semifinale del Campionato del Mondo contro la Germania Ovest, nella partita conosciuta come 'la partita del secolo', ricordata da una targa commemorativa posta all'ingresso dello Stadio Atzeca di Città del Messico, sede dell'evento.

Nell'estate 1967 il Cagliari disputò il campionato statunitense organizzato dalla United Soccer Association. Il campionato fu disputato da formazioni europee e sudamericane per conto delle franchigie ufficialmente iscritte al campionato, che per ragioni di tempo non avevano potuto allestire le proprie squadre.

Nel 1970 il Cagliari campione d'Italia disputò la sua prima (e per ora unica) Coppa dei Campioni. Nel primo turno affrontò e sconfisse i campioni di Francia del St. Etienne, vincendo per 3-0 in casa, nel nuovissimo Stadio S.Elia e perdendo per 1-0 in Francia.
In 1970, Cagliari played his first (and so far only) Champions League. In the first round he faced and defeated the French champions of St. Etienne, winning 3-0 in the new S.Elia's Stadium, and losing 1-0 in France.
