Bonnie Doon is a small tourist town located in the Mansfield Shire with a population of around 750 people. It is 21 km from Mansfield, 47 km from Alexandra, 71 km from Eildon and 168 km from Melbourne on the Maroondah Highway.
History:
Originally called 'Doon', Bonnie Doon grew into a booming township when gold was discovered in the district in the late 1860s. In 1891 a rail branch line was opened between Tallarook and Mansfield. The branch line ran though the old Bonnie Doon township. In 1957 the capacity of the Sugarloaf Weir was increased tenfold with the opening of the 'Big Eildon' Dam Project. The old townships of Bonnie Doon and Darlingford were submerged by this upgrade and the new township of Bonnie Doon was established just above the high water line to the south. New rail and road bridges were built as a part of this upgrade. In 1978 the railway line was closed by the State Government.
