Geocache Description:

Sezona:

Slapovi bodo najlepši, če bo veliko vode, torej ujemite čas svežega zelenja ali zlate jeseni. Popoldne bo v grapo morda posijalo vsaj malo sonca.

Oprema:

Dobri čevlji in pohodne palice

Časi:

Belvedur – Dragonja 45 min

Dragonja – Pasjak 5-10 min

Pasjak – Belvedur 60 min (Varianta: Pasjak – Belvedur 120 min)

Izhodišče:

Belvedur.

Zahtevnost in opis poti:

Srečno pot in lep geolov! Uživajte v čudoviti naravi!

PS: Po vrnitvi s sprehoda se lakho okrepite v gostilni (glej waypoint parking 1). Domači fuži s tartufi so božanski (glej priloženo sliko). angelYummie!

English description:

In a narrow ravine right at the border between Slovenia and Croatia you will find a couple of beautiful and picturesque waterfalls. The cache is hidden close to the biggest and most spectacular waterfall which is called Slap (Slovene for waterfall) Pasjak. It is the easiest accessible of all the falls in the ravine. If you want to enjoy it in all its beauty, come in spring or autumn when there is enough water.

Recommended equipment:

Sturdy waterproof hiking boots and walking poles

Walking times:

Belvedur – Dragonja 45 min

Dragonja – Pasjak 5-10 min

Pasjak – Belvedur 60 min (Variation: Pasjak – Belvedur 120 min)

Starting point of the tour:

Park your car in Belvedur or Topolovec. You can leave your vehicle near the gostilna/restaurant (see waypoint parking 1) or drive on for ca. half a mile to the village of Topolovec (see waypoint parking 2). To get to this remote spot in the middle of nowhere you have to leave the highway Ljubljana<>Koper at the exit Rižana and drive via Kubed and Gračišče to Sočerga. From here it is not very far to Belvedur. Look on a detailed map or trust your GPS (it might be helpful to consult a map of the region as well…).

Description and difficulty of the tour:

The descent from Belvedur/Topolovec down into the Dragonja valley is fairly easy. Even though there are no trail markers you cannot miss the Pasjak waterfall. Here and there you will see some yellow signposts with directions for Slap Pasjak (see for example waypoint in picture zid/wall).

From Belvedur you walk on the paved road towards Topolovec. In Topolovec go to the "city center" and its "main square" (there is just one, see also attached picture trg). At the square, take the little road to the left (seen from Belvedur). After a couple of meters you will see the first yellow signpost. From here you continue on a cart track to Sveti Hieronim (Saint Jerome). After a few minutes you will come to another signpost (see waypoint and picture zid-wall). The next waypoint (see waypoint and picture ruševine-ruins) is not far. From here you just follow the path that leads down the hill. Soon you will reach a ridge and have a first glimpse of the Pasjak ravine.

While you are hiking down on the ridge into the Dragonja river valley the Pasjak ravine with the waterfalls will always be on your left side. That means once you are down at the bottom of the Dragonja valley the Pasjak creek will also be on your left. Depending on where exactly you come down (remember: there are no marked trails here) you might have to walk a couple of meters to reach the confluence of Pasjak and Dragonja. But as I said before, you cannot miss it. Once you have reached the Pasjak creek, walk upstream. You will find little trails on both sides of the creek. It depends on the water level and actual conditions which side will be more suitable for walking. After 5 to 10 minutes you will reach the mighty Pasjak waterfall where the cache is hidden.

Since the GPS signal can be quite week in this narrow ravine (+/- 10 to 15 m), you might want to take a look at the provided spoiler pictures and/or the hint.

Return path:

1. If you want to be on the safe side, take the same way back.

2. Very interesting variation for more adventure-minded cachers: If you want to explore the upper waterfalls as well, you can also return by hiking upstream through the ravine. To do so find a trail on the left that leads you around the big Pasjak fall. Then you will have to walk on the sides of the river bed. You might have to switch sides from time to time and must find your way around the other waterfalls (in most cases it is easiest to circumvent them on the left side). Well, you simply have to find your own way. But climbing or canyoning is not necessary. At the end of this upstream adventure my shoes were muddy but not wet. It is really worth the extra effort. You will feel like a real explorer. Not many people know about these waterfalls.

After the last upper waterfalls you will hit a cart trail. Take this trail to the left (towards Slovenia)! If you go right you will end up in Croatia. The trail to the left will lead you to the ridge on which you descended into the Dragonja valley. From the ridge you can walk back towards Sveti Hieronim and Topolovec/Belvedur.

This return variation is only suitable for adventurous geocachers who are looking for an additional dose of adrenaline. I advise families with (smaller) children or people with a fear of heights to take the same way back. Better safe than sorry!

I wish you a very pleasant hike and a successful geohunt! Enjoy the beautiful nature! I am looking forward to reading your logs.

PS: After your return to the car you can beef yourself up in the nearby restaurant Belvedur (see waypoint parking 1). They also serve excellent vegetarian food. The home-made fuži with tartufi (traditional Istrian pasta with black truffles; see attached picture) are divine. angel Yummie!
