Geocache Description:

A multi-cache at the fascinating church of St Mary the Virgin in the village of Hardwick, Buckinghamshire.

Hardwick Church

The cache is not at the above coordinates.

The parish church of St Mary the Virgin is one of the oldest churches in this part of the country, with parts dating from the Anglo-Saxon period.  The small arched window above the north door, for instance, is reputed to be Saxon in origin.  It is thought that the Saxon landowner under the King at the time of Domesday in 1086, Saxi, was responsible for much of the original construction of the old church building.

There were extensive renovations made to the building in the 14th and 15th centuries, and the stained glass throughout the building was completely replaced in 1872.  The belfry holds six bells, the oldest dating from 1590.

To the south of the church building in the churchyard is a grave reputed to hold the remains of the men who died at the Battle of Aylesbury in 1642.  There is much debate as to whether this battle ever actually took place, and some historians suggest that the bodies that were discovered by Lord Nugent in the early 19th century were in fact originally buried in a plague pit on the parish boundary near Holman's Bridge.

The cache:

Look round the churchyard to gather the following clues.  The cache is located at N51 51.ABC W000 49.DEF where:

A Find the date above the main gate to the south west of the church. Subtract the fourth digit of the year, from the third digit.

B On the north and west face of the tower are two clocks. Each one has a star at its centre. Subtract 4 from the number of points of that star.

C To the right of the north door is a small noticeboard, with the village name written above it, but with an extra letter added that does not appear in the village name today. Convert that letter to a number in the traditional way (A=1, B=2, etc.) then subtract 2.

D Find a grave to the east of the church flanked by two mourning angels. Find the date in October that George Alfred died, and subtract the first digit from the second digit.

E Find a plaque on a stick in memory of Frances and Tom Harding. Subtract 2 from the fourth digit of the year of Frances' birth.

F Look at the war memorial and find someone with the last name Wroughton. Count the number of letters in his first name.

Please exercise stealth at GZ.
