Lightapalooza Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

JL_HSTRE: It's time to turn out the light on this event listing, but the Jupiter Lighthouse will continue to shine on.

My boss was happy to hear about the large turnout and gave me the green light for similar events in the future. Thanks to all who attended, whether you took the tour or not.

Whether you missed this year or just want to climb the lighthouse again, there will likely be a Lightapalooza II to wrap up CP10 weekend.

Geocache Description:

Love history? Love lighthouses? Lived here X number of years but have never climbed the lighthouse? Just want an excuse to hang out with geocachers one last time to wrap up Cacheapalooza 9 weekend? If any of those apply then this event is for you!

This event is part of Cacheapalooza 9 weekend.

The Event
Date: Monday January 19, 2015
Time: 9:45AM-10:15AM meet-n-greet / 10:15AM-11:15AM optional tour

We will gather at 9:45AM around the posted coordinates outside Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Museum and socialize until 10:15AM. There is a cafe at the end of the building for those who want coffee or other light snacks and refreshments, or you can bring your own. Immediately following the meet-n-greet, there will be an optional history tour and lighthouse climb. Tour signup begins at 10AM; the tour will start at 10:15AM and last until approximately 11:15AM. Once the tour is finished you can visit the museum which is included in the tour price. If you are not going on the tour you can continue to relax on the porch, under the big oaks, or on the river beach.

The Tour
The tour is approximately a 1/2 mile roundtrip walking on a sidewalk, plus climbing 35 steps up the hill and 105 steps to the top of the lighthouse. Your tour guide will tell you a great deal about local history during the tour. Children must be at least 4 ft tall to climb the lighthouse. Heels are prohibited and flip-flops are strongly discouraged. Disclaimer: if you have vertigo, claustrophobia, a pregnancy, or a heart condition then climbing a lighthouse may not be for you. You can go on the tour without making the climb.

For the event tour only the admission fee is discounted ($8 per person; $4 if 18 or younger). Also, your tour guide will be Joshism who is not only the event CO but also the Historian for the historical society that operates the lighthouse and museum.

When you log your Will Attend please note whether you plan to take the tour so I can have an approximate head count.

The Lighthouse
Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse was built in 1860 and remains an active lighthouse with 1 of only 13 First Order Fresnel Lens still in use in the US.  The lighthouse is part of the 120-acre Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area (JILONA) which has been used by all 5 branches of the US military and has evidence of human habitation going back 5000 years.

Dogs and smoking are prohibited on the tour and in the park.
