How Geocaching Works

Geocache Description:

Flash Mob - followed by quick Meet and Greet and TB Swap - then a 5K hike (not run)

Arrive before 8:00am - but do not gather until then

A flash mob happens when a lot of people gather together all at once, in an unexpected way from the point of view of others in the area.  A Cache Mob happens when a group of Geocachers get together - you never know what will happen next.

The Event Schedule will be:

8:00am - Act like you are playing Marbles - you do remember how to play Marbles, right?
8:05am - Continue with Meet & Greet at posted coordinates - exchange TBs and tales
8:10am - Sign log and take picture
8:15am - Flash Mob over - disperse - or join in on the 5K hike

Cache Mobs are a quick-moving event with little time for socializing, but anyone who wants to stay on afterwards and enjoy the morning touring the IDA Lee Park while chatting with your fellow geocachers are welcome to do so!  There are some interesting caches along the 5K route.

We look forward to seeing all of our geocaching friends and meeting those of you whom we've not had the pleasure of meeting yet out on the trails! This is a geocaching event first, with a 5K hike occurring after we get together. Participation in the hike portion is completely optional and at the discretion of all attendees. A special logbook will be present at the posted coordinates for the duration of the event, from 08:00 to 08:15 a.m.

EarthCaching is celebrating 10 years in 2014, and as a part of the celebrations geocachers everywhere will be able to participate in a special "Virtual 5k!" Virtual, meaning you can complete your own 5k as a part of one big celebration. This event is a chance for NoVA area cachers to come together and then participate as a small group if they so desire. This is a real get-together event which will then be followed by a Cache Mob hike! If you can't attend this event you can still participate in the Virtual 5k - see below.

On October 12th meet at the posted coordinates at 8:00 am, rain or shine. Hopefully it will be a wonderful, crisp Fall morning. We will meet and greet for approximately 15 minutes, ending at 08:15. After the meeting, interested participants may commence hiking from near the Earthcache GC2C1D8 “Potomac Marble”  - all around the Ida Lee Park - roundtrip distance of 5 kilometers (3.106 miles). We’ll take pictures, after the hike, at the Earthcache location to qualify as participants in the virtual race and get the special icon.

How the EarthCache Virtual 5k works according to the Geological Society of America:

After the event, participants may choose to walk a 5 km (3.106 miles) distance starting at or ending at an active EarthCache on any of the days over which the 5K is being held (Friday 3 October through Monday 13 October 2014). Time yourself from start to finish and take a photo of yourself holding a race 'bib' sign with the GC code of the EarthCache. At the end of your 5K, complete a simple form and upload your photo. Everyone who completes the 5K and uploads a photo will be sent an icon via email that you can display on your caching pages or website.

More Information:

Official rules and race bibs can be found at the EarthCache Virtual 5k webpage. Please print your bib and bring it with you.

Please contact me with any questions and I look forward to hiking with you! Check the page regularly for updates. Attendees who would like to bring extra water or high energy snacks or other useful items please note it in your "will attend" log (and thank you!).
