Geocache Description:

Village signs is a series of caches based on the ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (normally on the village green!).

Abbotsley is a village and civil parish within the Huntingdonshire district of Cambridgeshire, England. It is three miles from St Neots and 14 miles from the county town of Cambridge. At the time of the 2001 census, the resident population was 425 people living in 164 households.

The village's name is derived from 'woodland clearing of a man called Ealdbeald.' It was not mentioned in the Domesday book but appears to have formed during the 12th century.

Abbotsley village is 14 miles from the county town of Cambridge and 47 miles from London. It is on the B1046 road between Great Gransden and St Neots. The elevation of the parish is between 22 and 60 metres (72-197 feet) above sea level. The subsoil is Oxford and Ampthill clay. A war memorial which stands in the churchyard commemorates Abbotsley men who died in the First and Second World Wars.

19 buildings in Abbotsley are listed (including the church). Among them are four houses along Blacksmiths Lane, nine houses along the High Street, a red telephone box and a table tomb in the churchyard.

In 1984 the Abbotsley Society kindly presented the village with a carved wooden sign, which was erected at the junction of High Street and Blacksmiths Lane.

The Parish Council funded this replacement sign in 2012 and it was unveiled by Anne Gibbons on 3 June 2012 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of He Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

The cache is just down the road from the village sign. Please do not go climbing all over the sign!

If anybody would like to expand this series please do. I would just ask that you let SmokeyPugs know first so they can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication..
