Cornelly Church:

Cornelly used to be a small parish on its own until it united with Tregony in 1934.

It is dedicated to St Cornelius and was built in the 13th century, with different bits added at later times.

Cornelly church is nicely hidden away from view of the road, and most people don’t know it is here.

Back in the mid 1800’s, it was part of the Powder Hundred. A Hundred is an old division of land dating back to Saxon times. Each Hundred was the division of a Shire, each made up of Ecclesiastical parishes. A Hundred Court presided over each one, and these were presided over by The Hundred Reeve who acted on behalf of the King. The court dealt with disputes and levied taxes. These were then replaced with Parochial and Manorial Administration under supervision of Justices of the Peace.
