(PT)Na ilha da Madeira, a origem das levadas deveu-se à necessidade de trazer grandes quantidades de água das vertentes orientadas a norte, onde abunda, para o lado sul da ilha, de mais fácil habitação e onde se situaram desde sempre a maioria das plantações, nomeadamente de cana-de-açúcar. As levadas começaram a ser construídas no século XVI, e as mais recentes datam da década de 1940, fornecendo água para centrais hidroeléctricas e também para fins de irrigação.
Estes canais têm, na Madeira, uma extensão superior a 2000 km e são susceptíveis de ser percorridos a pé, sendo uma forma muito procurada de visitar locais da ilha, de grande beleza paisagística.
