It’s been thirty years since I first found this location. It is on
State land. There are trails for snowmobiles in this area so it is
great for hiking through in the summer.
I didn’t know which name to pick going to this location, either
“cave”, or “you have to be crazy”, but after getting there I
decided on “Lair”. The last name because I found big cat tracks
near the cave and droppings that I don’t think would come out of a
Bobcat.
After placing the cache on the way out I stopped and talked with
a local farmer. He said that there has been a cougar sighted in the
area in the past. Also he has seen a bear recently, so keep an eye
out for these guys.
When I got close to the cave I spooked something down hill from
me. It did not run like a deer and I’ve heard a bear in a forest in
Alaska run once and it didn’t quite sound like that either. I
should have gone down to where it run from to look for tracks. I
didn’t think of that until I got back to the car. If you hear
something keep that in mind, maybe you can find some tracks.
Bring water and a camera. It’s a hard walk especially through
the enchanted pine forest. That was tough picking a way through the
branches.
Be sure to go to the top of the rock N43° 47.299, W91° 17.990.
There’s a way up on the right side as you are facing the rock. It’s
worth the extra effort for the view. You can drive up the Minimum
Maintenance Road if you have a pick up or good ground clearance
with your vehicle. There is an area you can turn around in to get
back out. I had to stop about 100 yards from the trailhead; the
road was too rough. I had to back to the turn around area. If you
cross the private field be careful with the fences please, we don’t
want the local farmer mad at us. Enjoy the walk. In respect with my
first cache and the ones I found in the mountains I think I rated
this one more correctly. Let me know what you think of the
rating.
Cache is a blue weather proof box, contains: a vial of Gold from
South Dakota, yucca seed pod and seeds from S.D., polished agates,
2 candles, matches, lighter (back-up lighting for cave exploring
please leave), flashlight and spare bulb (for cave exploring,
please leave), bandages, flower seeds, Brass dollar and quarters, 2
packs of batteries (aaa & aa) log book pen and pencils (please
log in).
Have fun.

New Update 5-4-09 It was time to replace the old box and check on
the location. Nice day for a hike. I think gravity is getting
stronger at the location since I was there last. I placed a new box
in the lair that should hold up better. Also I placed some new
items there. I put in 10 bags of U.S. Cash. Please take only one
bag when you visit. I did the same years ago in another cache and
had good results. Also a new log book was placed. Some new trinkets
that can be converted to travel bugs if you wish. I would like to
thank everyone who visited the cache and the kind logs. This is a
special place for all of us. Enjoy.
