Geocache Description:

Well Woods CITO Event
December 6th 2014

We have organised a CITO at the lovely Well Woods in conjunction with the London Borough of Bromley and The Friends of Well Woods.

Those attending will get a CITO icon in your profile of caches found.

ITINERARY

This is the first CITO of what is hoped to be several in the Borough of Bromley. This is the chance for us to show what sort of folk we Geocachers are and to contribute something to the beautiful woods in the Borough of Bromley.
  • 09.30 Meet in the car park at Well Woods although you will need to park in the adjacent street (Lime Tree Walk) as the car park is very small and used by the numerous dog walkers.
  • 09.40 A short Health and Safety talk with be given by Pherenice Worsey-Buck (LBB) on all aspects of the event.
  • 09.55 We will be split into groups and each group will be allocated an activity; there will be litter picking and tree planting (both suitable for children - the under 16s MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times). Also to be done is cutting back vegetation and coppicing. This will be a very hands on CITO!
  • 12.30Finish our good work and admire what’s been achieved! Return to the gazebo for refreshments (mince pies and hot mulled wine, tea/coffee/hot chocolate and squash) provided by the LBB and possibly cupcakes by Pherenice & Mrs CC!!

IMPORTANT THINGS
I DO NEED TO KNOW SOME IDEA OF NUMBERS TO ARRANGE ADEQUATE STAFFING LEVELS AND REFRESHMENTS SO WHEN POSTING YOUR “WILL ATTEND” LOG, PLEASE INDICATE HOW MANY ARE IN YOUR PARTY.

Could you please log your intentions to attend by 25th November to enable final arrangements to be made, thank you.

Dogs and children welcome but they must be kept under control.

What do you need to bring?
Stout walking boots or Wellington boots, gardening gloves if you want to wear your own, although these will be provided, layers of normal walking clothing plus waterproofs and drinks while working.

General Information

All rubbish will be disposed of by the LBB and the Friends of Well Wood.

I would suggest you keep this page on your “watch” list so that you can be kept up to date with any additional information we might need to provide.

If you have any questions then please email through our profile ticking the box to show your email address, please.

General Advice
  • Always follow the instructions of the workers assigned to assist on the day.
  • Use the right tool for the job
  • Do not lift anything heavy without help.
  • Keep the work area tidy and safe.
  • Do not work alone and keep a First Aid kit handy (there will be a First Aider present on the day)).
  • If you don’t like the look of it then don’t touch it!!

HEALTH AND SAFETY,

Hazard – Person/s at risk – Risk Level – Action required by the LBB or individuals

Cuts to fingers from handling broken glass or sharp metal – Volunteers (low risk – wear gloves at all times). There will be a Registered First Aider present all the time.

Slipping on muddy slopes if wet weather – Volunteers (low risk – ensure nobody works alone)

Lifting injuries – Volunteers (low risk – Work together with others to lift heavy objects)

Tripping over tools or cleared rubbish – Volunteers and the public (low risk – ensure all volunteers know how to use and store tools safely. Designate a tool storage area away from paths. Rubbish cleared should be put in a safe place where it does not block the paths or access for other volunteers)

Infection from needles – Volunteers (low risk – instruct all volunteers not to touch a needle if they find one. Inform one of the members of staff who will arrange collection and disposal of the item)

Please note.... If you take part in this activity, you do so entirely at your own and the London Borough of Bromley (and the Friends of Well Woods) will not be held responsible for any injuries.

Once you’ve finished the work and finished eating , drinking and socialising then you might like to go after some of the caches in these woods. There is our popular Creepy Crawlies in the Night cache for after dark and seeing as it’s December, the Secret Santa cache will be up and running along with the Xmas tree cache. Don’t forget to bring some Xmas decorations to decorate the tree. This is an Annual attraction in the woods when we dress the tree throughout December and then meet (by torchlight) on the Saturday evening as near to Twelfth Night as we can. See Strip the Xmas Tree Event. We all bring along leftover mince pies, chocolates, cake etc and enjoy some mulled wine and hot blackcurrant drink. It’s been a very popular event and I hope you will put it in your diary!
