Geocache Description:

Welcome to Cenote Tza Itza.  The cache is NOT located in the actual cenote, but nearby.   This cache is conveniently located just off of Highway 18 between Merida and the Mayapan archaeological site.

In the heat of Mexico, enjoy a swim in the refreshing water of the cenote.  Cenote access is good via wooden stairs (note that one step is missing).  There is a palapa picnic area for your use.

Note that the Hint and Photos contain spoilers.  This is a high muggle area, so be careful and re-hide the cache well.

What is a Cenote?  A cenote (Maya = dzonot ) is a natural sinkhole created after limestrone bedrock collapses exposing the water underneath.  There are various types of cenotes . . . land level (similar to a pond), open well, semi-underground or completely underground.  The ancient Maya sometimes used cenotes for their water source, ceremonies, or sacrificial offerings.
