	O Bairro dos Pescadores, construído num terra-pleno aberto no topo do morro do Calvário, foi edificado pelo Estado Novo, no âmbito duma política habitacional que procurava circunscrever os pescadores a uma determinada zona habitacional. As primeiras 40 casas foram concluídas em 1944, a que se juntaram outras 36 em 1949. A obra foi intensamente utilizada para propaganda política de um dos sectores mais conservadores mais conservadores do regime, organizado em torno de figuras como Américo Tomás e Henrique Tenreiro, que dominavam o sector da pesca e as Casas dos pescadores. A inauguração da segunda fase foi marcada para o dia 23 de Janeiro de 1949, a poucas semanas da eleições presidencial (13 de Fevereiro) e utilizada para angariar votos para o candidato do regime (general Óscar Carmona) contra o candidato da oposição (Norton de Matos).


	The Bairro dos Pescadores, built in a land full-open at the top of the hill of Calvary, was built by the New State, in connection with a housing policy that sought to limit fishermen to a certain residential area. The first 40 houses were completed in 1944, who joined the other 36 in 1949. The work was used extensively for political propaganda of one of the more conservative sectors of the conservative regime, organized around figures like Américo Tomás and Henrique Tenreiro, who dominated the fishing industry and the Houses of fishermen. The inauguration of the second phase was scheduled for January 23, 1949, a few weeks before the presidential elections (February 13) and used to garner votes for the candidate of the regime (Gen. Óscar Carmona) against the opposition candidate (Norton Matos).
