Historic Pine Cone Inn Traditional Geocache
mt.lovers: It has been a GRRREAT ride with this geocache over the years. It was found 775 times and not found 56 times!!! Continuing Maintenance on this cache was tougher than any other geocache we have placed as the MUGGLES just loved taking it. So, unfortunately, the time has come for me to archive it. Hopefully the history of this building in Grand lake, CO will still be available for all to read.

This location is where one of the first eight buildings around Grand Lake was built in 1878 by Wilson Waldron, and also is the birthplace of Grand Lake’s first child. The building was purchased in 1919 and subsequently demolished by the new owner who then built the Pine Cone Inn. Watch out for the Muggles and PLEASE replace the cache in the exact spot you found it
Grand Lake during prohibition was both a popular destination for entertainment and a remote location for law enforcement. The Pine Cone was the center of Grand County’ s social scene. From the 1920s through the 1940s, families came for music and dancing, and the bar offered both liquor and ice cream. The original Pine Cone Inn burned to the ground in September, 1943, but was totally rebuilt immediately. It became the Wagon Wheel Bar which served liquor and sandwiches, and also provided a place for dancing. The building was sold in 1952 and from then until the 1980s, the property changed hands several times and was know as Voltaire’s, Little Bear, and The Pine Cone Theater. It was then demolished , except for the Round Room, in the mid 1980s to make way for a new development called the New Pine Cone Inn. These plans evaporated, and the Round Room you see remaining today has housed many different retail businesses, and in the future something new will be built on Grand Lake’s oldest corner. Look up the hill at the open lot and the building on the left and note the round roof of the Round Room. This is what remains today of the historic legacy of this area
